1. Field Responsibilities for Handling Coating Materials and Solvents on Site
Use the guideline for handling material:
Step | Action |
1.1 | Store materials appropriately at job site.
• Store suitably to prevent an unintended release into the environment • Store out of weather that may affect labels or contaminate materials. • Store materials in compliance with PDS environmental requirements (proper temperature, humidity, etc.). • Ensure all material container lids or caps are secured properly when not in use. • Ensure correct materials are on the project in the correct container size and proper ratios. • All materials, including used solvents, must be labeled appropriately. |
1.2 | Manage material usage.
• Only open materials when ready to use. • Only mix materials needed for current use. • Ensure all materials are well positioned with lids secured when not in use. • Ensure full kits are mixed with the correct components at the correct ratios. Note: If full kits are not used, ensure proper ratios with a proportioner bucket, and reseal and utilize unused material first on the next mix. |
1.3 | Consolidate leftover materials for return to shop.
• Used solvents must be stored and transported in properly sealed and labeled containers. • All solvent containers must be labeled appropriately with either: o Original manufacturer labels o “Used solvents” • Leftover coatings that will be disposed of at shop must be in sealed container with original manufacturer label. • Leftover coatings that will be returned to shop for future use must have: o Appropriate shelf life o All correct components to complete the “kit” o Ability to potentially be returned to supplier |
1.4 | Catalyze partial kits:
• Mix open kits and allow to cure in a safe location out of the weather. o Only if small amounts can be mixed and allowed to cure (less than 2 inches in buckets) o Only when circumstances allow |
2. Returning Leftover Material and Used Solvents
Use the guideline for returning leftover material and used solvents:
Step | Action |
2.1 | Organize materials for return.
• All materials must be in suitable, sealed containers • All containers must be labeled appropriately with either: o Original manufacturer labels o “Used solvents” • All containers must be labeled with date and job number |
2.2 | Load in trucks or trailers for return, verifying unintended release will not occur during transportation |
2.3 | Verify all buckets are clean and will not get any paint or solvents on trucks or trailers during transportation. |
2.4 | Unload all leftover material and solvents in paint storage building. • NEVER leave buckets outside.
• Ensure all materials are stored on plastic covering. |
